I really love traveling. I do. And one thing I’ve been struggling with is to find a good GMT watch to bring on my trips.

Some may say "Oh, just get a Rolex GMT-Master II -if you can afford it- it'll serve you as a travel watch and also as a dress watch". And frankly, I disagree.

Maybe, and I say maybe, you could travel to Switzerland and feel relatively safe with a 10K watch on your wrist. But why would I need a GMT watch if I'm in the same time zone as my home country? GMT watches really shine when the time difference is greater than just a few hours. And I wouldn't feel safe traveling to other continents with a watch that expensive.

The sweet spot for me is a few-hundred euros watch that is almost unknown for the stealers. Even better if it's already scratched. A GMT watch for travel should be UNAPPEALING unless you're some kind of monarch living abroad with more security than moral (Pun intended).

I am talking about the Panerai Luminor Due 42 that I could get my hands on yesterday.

I have admired Panerai watches since I first knew about them, but its bulkiness made me doubt about fancing one of those. Not anymore. The Luminor Due is way, WAY thinnier than the original Luminor and it wears like a glove.

I had always said that my next luxury watch would be a Seamaster’s Diver 300, but I wouldn’t swear by it anymore.

Yesterday I went to the shopping mall (you know, it’s that time of the year again), and I got to put my hands on a brand new 14 inch M1 MAX MacBook Pro.

I mean, I probably held it for about 2 minutes, that’s it and I am definitely not here to talk about the specs, but I want to talk about how it felt in my hands. For a brief moment, it was like holding my very first MacBook, the plastiky white one that I got on 2009.

Boy this new Mac brings me a lot of memories. It is thicker than my current Intel’s16 inch, but those rounded edges make it so easy to hold I woul swap mine in a blink of an eye.

My iPad Of Choice

So, last week I went to the Apple Store to take a look at the new iPad mini. Although I really like its sleek design and insane portability, it made clearer than ever to me that my next iPad will still be the base model, The iPad (That's right, you read it well, the one without a Second Name). Let me explain.

I've been an iPad user since the iPad 2 came out (Although back then I bought the first generation). Since the very first evening, the iPad totally hacked the way I consume media and websites while sitting on the couch. Previous to the iPad, I usually brought my Macbook and surf the web while torturing my body due to the very uncomfortable position I had to adopt (You know, just to keep the laptop over my lap while still facing the TV). But all that changed the moment the iPad came home. I could surf the web, read and play Youtube videos without plug it and with a more comfortable body position. It was like a revelation, I thought "This is it! This is the way content is meant to be consumed".

Over the last decade, I've been lucky to try different models and sizes (Even a first and fourth generation iPad mini). And I understand the buzz when all of a sudden, back in 2015, Apple introduced the 12.9 inches iPad Pro. Some people worshipped its giant screen's real state and I get it, if you plan to get things done on an iPad this is probably your go-to size. For me, it's not.

I work primarily on my MacBook Pro, mostly Xcode stuff; For the past year we have seen Apple making steps into the iPad as a programming device way of life but let's face it. Xcode will may run on an iPad someday, but this does not mean a programmer can through its laptop away. For instance, Usually I multitask between 7 and 10 apps when doing my job, and I have to easily switch back and forth multiple times on a single minute; and I know some people say they "multitask" on an iPad but let's face, to put it in Steve Jobs words: iPadOS's multitasking is like baby multitasking. And I get it! This is why the iPad is so amazing! You can focus on a single task and perform that task in a superb way. But this is just not compatible -yet- with some heavy work stuff.

So the question follows: What is the iPad for?. And for me, the answer is pretty simple: The iPad is an amazing tool for consuming content and when I say consuming content I mostly mean surfing the web and play Youtube videos.

To accomplish this simple task; I think (and notice the bold type), the iPad mini falls behind. Nor just the videos play in a screen witch is too small, but the websites usually render as mobile due to the lack of space. It's awful, it feels like browsing the web in a very big iPhone.

And here is when it gets complicated; the iPad Air would still be the best possible device (Sleek design, screen size... ) But I think (again, the bold type), it has one big flaw and this is its aspect ratio. While every iPad (Excluding the ones with the new design) had a respectable 4:3 aspect ratio witch IMHO was AMAZING for reading and browsing, the iPad Air has a 23:16 aspect ratio witch is... weird I guess? I do not know how to phrase it, but it certainly felt weird in my hands.

So what can I say? The cheapest and most boring iPad is the one that checks all the boxes. And coming from Apple that's a nice surprise!

About Cold Calling

In the last 24 hours I’ve received three calls from two different companies to sell me stuff. Last week one lady called me at 9:55 PM. It’s just crazy.

I have always thought that cold calling should be forbidden. No excuses. This type of sales technique is by far the most intrusive and outrageous. If I walk into a store I am the one making the move and deciding by myself that I am willing to get the information. On the other hand, if I surf the web to a specific site, it is me who actually made the move, assuming all the ads and tracking that this particular site would potentially have.

But with cold calling the target is completely helpless. There’s nothing you can do about it. You could blacklist those numbers, but again, those evil companies will likely change their number quite often. And even if they don’t, what are you supposed to do? Never receive calls from that number ever again? Phone numbers get recycled you know…

So last week I got Slay The Spire on the Nintendo eShop for 15 euros. Total bargain.

Truth being told, I've had a pretty good time playing it! And I have enjoyed every minute of it. Although to be fair, I have to admit that my gaming time has certainly decreased over the past few weeks. But that is exactly the point, Slay The Spire acts as an easy-to-play / hard-to-master game with almost zero time to action, witch is perfect for the *quickies*.

I have played RPGs before and some of them I love, some of them I don't. In this particular case, Slay The Spire adds the trading card component and that is key. In my younger days, nerd me used to play Pokémon and Magic The Gathering. Not as a pro or even a semi-pro level, but with friends and with friends of friends at the pool or at school. And somehow, Slay The Spire managed to evoke those afternoon combats.

In fact, what the hell? I DO want to trade cards again! (I still keep my curated deck 🙂).

Hablo de la reciente noticia de que AMC y Universal se han puesto de acuerdo para acortar el tiempo transcurrido desde que una cinta se estrena en el cine hasta que esta está disponible en los servicios digitales.

Esta es una crónica de una muerte anunciada; no voy a engañaros, no tengo los datos reales de asistencia y facturación de las salas de cine ni a nivel estatal ni a nivel mundial, pero seguro que el negocio no goza de la misma salud que tenía hace 30, 20 o incluso 10 años. Y por si fuera poco a esta situación se le ha sumado la pandemia. Un desastre.

Los mejores años de las salas de cine ya han quedado atrás, y no parece que vayan a volver. Preguntas por ahí y sólo te contestan que “es para sociabilizar cuando vas con los amigos” o que “es la exucsa para comer palomitas”. La realidad es que nadie menciona el visionado de la película en sí; no pueden, porque objetivamente hablando, se trata de experiencia que no puede competir con el visionado que podemos realizar en casa.

Por poco más de 500 euros podemos disponer de un panel de gran calidad con gran resolución de imagen que nada tiene que envidiar a las pantallas de las salas. Es más, en cuanto a calidad de imagen estrictamente hablando, estas últimas salen tremendamente perjudicadas en la comparativa directa. ¡Y hay más! tu televisor tiene una característica que lo hace único en comparación con las pantallas y es su ubicación: está en tu casa. No importa lo cómodas que sean las butacas del cine, no son tan cómodas como tu sofá. A parte, el control de la reproducción es completamente nuestro, en la mayoría de servicios de video en demanda tenemos dos días completos para reproducir la película desde que empezamos a verla, esto es ideal porque puedes pausar a voluntad para ir al baño -o prepararte un Gin-Tonic, eso ya a tu criterio- y si te entra sueño… Continúas a la mañana siguiente.

Con todo y con eso, me entristece presenciar el ocaso de un modelo de negocio. Es triste, y más cuando en el periodo en el que estamos supone un incremento de trabajadores que muy posiblemente pierdan su empleo. El renovarse o morir cobra aquí más sentido que nunca. Ojalá que las salas de cine se puedan convertir sin problemas en salas de teatro y conciertos, tal vez así mantengan su viabilidad.

40 AÑAZOS DEL WALKMAN

Esta semana se cumplen 40 años del SONY WALKMAN.

No os voy a engañar, llegué al Walkman a mediados de los ‘90, cuando en la radio sonaban los Backstreet Boys y las Spice Girls, y tengo que reconocer que al igual que mucha gente de mi generación estos cassettes sonaban en bucle en mi juguete musical nuevo.

Parecía algo increíble poder llevar en tu cinturón (Sí nenas, así de molones éramos algunos) un cachivache al que endiñarle tu propia música y así poder escuchar algo diferente a lo que fuera que estuvieran escuchando tus padres. El juguetico sonaba a libertad.

Ahora todos vamos con smartphones del futuro con acceso a un sinfín de música de todos los estilos. Auriculares inalámbricos, streaming de los videoclips desde el metro… Pero en el fondo, todos sabemos que lo de hoy no hubiera sido posible sin ese pequeño juguete de SONY. Gracias.

Algo está cambiando en nuestra forma de consumir contenido audiovisual. NETFLIX, HBO y PRIME VIDEO han cogido el testigo a las cadenas de TV tradicionales y están reclamando parte del pastel.

¿En qué situación deja eso a YOUTUBE? Si bien es cierto que las empresas de vídeo bajo demanda se caracterizan por ofrecer series y películas a sus usuarios, YOUTUBE está más cerca de parecerse a TELECINCO que a la BBC.

Me explico; para grandes producciones (The Crown, Narcos, Game of Thrones…) el dedo automáticamente mueve el cursor a apps como NETFLIX, HBO y PRIME VIDEO. Sabemos que si queremos contenido de calidad con altos (O no tan altos) valores de producción, ese es el destino.

¿En qué situación deja eso a YOUTUBE? Si reflexionamos un poco, YOUTUBE es el cajón de sastre al que acudimos cuando no sabemos qué ver. YOUTUBE es el sitio donde encontraremos el contenido más controvertido (Vídeos de xyz, Respuesta al vídeo de xyz, Rompí con mi pareja y lo que sucedió a continuación te sorprenderá…) asumámoslo, YOUTUBE ha pasado a ser la TELECINCO de los jóvenes; y sus números no hacen más que reforzar mi teoría.

Eso no quiere decir que ver YOUTUBE sea malo. A diferencia de TELECINCO, en YOUTUBE el usuario puede elegir qué ver y cuándo verlo. Del mismo modo que encontramos vídeos basura de youtubers con los humos subidos, podemos encontrar documentales de asombrosa calidad o reportajes de webs que confían en el servicio de vídeo de la gran G como hosting para su contenido audiovisual.

NETFLIX, HBO, PRIME VIDEO, YOUTUBE… Si entras dentro de la categoría de millennial, muy posiblemente estas sean tus opciones a la hora de elegir qué ver esta noche. Y es que si algo está claro es que las cadenas tradicionales, por lo menos las españolas, tienen los años contados, incluso TELECINCO.

Este post se escribe solo. De hecho, podía haberlo escrito hace tiempo, pues hace tiempo que el borrador corre por mi cabeza. Pero tenía muy claro que si este borrador pasaba alguna vez a mayores, sería tras una buena reflexión personal y con buenas dosis de paciencia. Espero estar a la altura de lo esperado. Allá va.

Siempre he defendido una movilidad sostenible. En una ciudad como Barcelona o Madrid es necesario un cambio en el modelo. Recuerdo la vez en la que estuve más de una hora de reloj para recorrer una distancia de 100 metros de la calle Rosselló en hora punta. Locura máxima. El transporte público va muy bien, pero en hora punta no hay quien aguante de pié con la cabeza enanchada al sobaco de un tipo cuya última ducha data del siglo pasado.

¿Es la bicicleta la respuesta a todos nuestros problemas? Francamente creo que no. Y no me malinterpretéis, es un medio de transporte limpio, efectivo, barato de mantener y muy en la línea healthy que está en boca de todos últimamente. El problema viene cuando intentas adaptar una ciudad que no está preparada para el ciclismo y le intentas “incular” las bicicletas sí o sí. Eso es un error.

Prueba de ello son las Glorias actuales. Debes armarte de valor si tu intención es intentar cruzar la Gran Via como peatón; a los coches, motos y tranvías ahora le tienes que añadir bicicletas, patines, patinetes y toda clase de chismes que te eximen de la ardua tarea de andar. Tampoco ayuda el hecho de que los carriles bici estén entrelazados con los pasos para peatones. Si vas a pié tienes que tener puestos los dos ojos, las dos orejas y parte de tus oraciones en llegar vivo al ileso al otro lado. Un despropósito para una ciudad que pretende fomentar un nivel de vida saludable.

… ¡pero es que si vas en coche es peor! Hay calles en Barcelona en las que para girar a la izquierda tienes que mirar no sólo a las bicis que te vienen en tu sentido por tu izquierda (¿?) ¡también a las que te vienen de frente en sentido contrario! Eso sin contar la impunidad con las que estas se encuentran, endiosadas por una política que claramente les favorece, no tienen el menor pudor en saltarse los semáforos en rojo y pasar por los pasos de cebra como si… bueno, como si les diese igual. ¿Y si el tráfico no les es favorable? ¡¿Qué más da?! Nos subimos a la acera y listos.

Y repito, no tengo nada en contra de este medio de transporte, pero forzarlo hasta este punto no creo que nos lleve nada más que disgustos. Todavía le queda un largo camino a Barcelona para llegar a ser bicycle friendly, y yo soy el primero con ganas de verlo, pero siguiendo el curso normal de las cosas y con una buena planificación urbanística, no a costa de lo que estamos viviendo ahora.

El ordenador "at an arm's length"

Desde la mudanza al nuevo piso, he optado por un modelo de escritorio dual, con el Mac mini como hub familiar, y a su vera mi querido MacBook Air. Siempre he creído que esta sería la configuración estándar para un buen balance entre trabajo y ocio (No instales Xcode donde esté iTunes).

Recientemente he retomado mi afición a los simuladores de vuelo. Como no vivo en un palacio, opté por montar el ASUS y los cuernos en la posición que originalmente alojaba el MacBook Air y Xcode. ¿Dónde dejo ahora el MacBook? pues en el mejor sitio posible, en frente del televisor.

Nunca he estado tan contento de un cambio en el diseño de mi espacio de trabajo. Sí, es verdad que he perdido el monitor de 23" y el teclado mecánico, pero el hecho de tener el ordenador “at an arm’s length” me ha permitido utilizarlo más, mucho más que antes. Cualquier momento es bueno para aplicar algún cambio en el código o comprobar esa característica en la que tanto has pensado durante el día. Después de cenar, con las noticias; esperando a que llegue ella; durante el desayuno… Es simplememente perfecto.

Es lamentable.

Escribo este post en medio de una de las discotecas de mayor afluencia entre el público juvenil. Son las 4:17 de la mañana, y esto roza lo patético.

Hace mucho tiempo que digo que no entiendo estos garitos, es decir, ¿Pagar cerca de 20€ para pasar calor rodeado de gente sudorosa mientras suena música de mierda y no puedes andar de la mierda que llega a tener el suelo? ¿¿En serio??

Hace tiempo que decidí que si quiero escuchar música que me guste tan sólo tengo que encender el iPod. ¿Y bailar? No necesito que la aprobación torsos modelados en el gimnasio para saber que bailo como el puto culo. Pero ese soy yo.

Reivindico el ir de fiesta PASANDOLO BIEN. Y no haciendo lo que la sociedad cree que tenemos que hacer.

La formación de la formación del profesorado

“¿Cómo? ¡¿Estaba abierta la Universidad?!” Esta fue la pregunta que me desmontó completamente. ¿Cómo que si estaba abierta la Universidad? ¿Es que a caso la Universidad cierra algún día? -Bueno, obviamente sí- pero por lo general en el centro donde cursé mis estudios superiores no tenía por costumbre cerrar puertas los fines de semana ¡Y menuda suerte teníamos! Los montones de prácticas se amontonaban en los talleres mientras mirabas de reojo la fecha de entrega (Sobre cinco, no recuerdo en ningún caso haber entregado ninguna a tiempo).

Esta pregunta despertó en mi interior, una necesidad imperiosa de escribir sobre un tema que yacía latente en mis adentros, Magisterio.

Antes de que se me acuse injustamente de ser partidista y de no respetar a los demás, me gustaría exponer mi punto de vista, y si por lo que puedo ver sigues leyendo estas lineas, es probable que hasta te interese lo que voy a decir.

En este tema, “lo fácil” es criticar buycbdproducts maestro. En nuestras esferas es recurrente el uso del vocablo “magisterio” como algo tremendamente fácil. Expresiones del tipo: “Qué vida más fácil tienen”, “No trabajan nada” “Eso lo hace cualquiera” o mi favorita: “Si no sabes qué estudiar métete a maestro”.

Bien, vayamos por partes, es importante para este ejercicio el hecho de que mi crítica va enfocada única y exclusivamente a sus peofesores -Los profesores de los peofesores… Suena raro ¿Verdad?- En definitiva son ellos los culpables de haber convertido tan loable profesión en un nido de gente sin vocación cuya única motivación para estudiar magisterio es porque ES FÁCIL. Y no debería.

Esta gente son los responsables DIRECTOS de acompañar en el camino hacia la madurez a los futuros corizantes de nuestro país. El futuro DIRECTO de España.

Los auténticos maestros, gente queestá en Magisterio por vocación, no paran de repetirlo: “La carrera debería ser más difícil” pero claro, chocan contra un sistema que lleva ya asentado demasiado el tema, igual que el de los funcionarios. Aunque esto último, claro, ya da para un post él solito.
